News from Oct 25, 2023

The Isreal-Hamas conflict's impact on the world can be felt everywhere. These impacts can also be seen at Berlin's universities and within our collaborative research center. Spokesperson Joachim Heberle was developing a virtual lecture for the German-Israeli Virtual Campus (GIVCA) alongside SFB PI Igor Schapiro (Project C6) at our partner institute, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI), when the armed conflicted began. In an FU interview by Christine Boldt and Carsten Wette, he anticipates disruptions in collaborative research with the region. Despite this, he expressed optimism about the continued collaboration after the region and their people have undergone substantial healing, especially with the power of modern technology.

All three universities have research collaborations in Israel which will be affected, and the future of a research project between the HU and four Palestinian universities hangs in the air, Gisela Gross reports in another article featuring Joachim by the Tagesspiegel. In addition to the scientific disruptions between Berlin institutes and the region, he discusses the immediate effects of the armed conflict on his colleagues, one of which he has extendted his home to─bringing them the safety we experience here in Berlin.
